Liquidity Constraints and Precautionary Savings: A Quantitative Analysis

چکیده
In this paper I quantify the effects of liquidity constraint and precautionary motive of savings in the framework of a stochastic dynamic general equilibrium model. I show that the Zeldes’s estimate [13] of the excess consumption growth for the low asset holders is consistent with the framework when the borrowing constraint point is three months’ worth of average wage income. A Monte Carlo test for the constraint point shows that the estimate is robust both to estimation errors and parameter specifications. Calibrating the model with the estimated borrowing constraint, I show that an increase in endowment shock within the range of empirical findings can cause 1.2% increase in aggregate saving rate and 10% increase in aggregate capital at the steady state.

Are poor households liquidity-constrained or myopic? Evidence from South African panel data
Liquidity constraints are an almost ubiquitous assumption in development economics. Yet the direct evidence for liquidity constraints is limited, and many observations consistent with liquidity constraints are equally compatible with precautionary saving or a lack of forward planning. Using household panel data and a source of widely anticipated income in South Africa, this paper tests and reje...

I estimate an extended version of the incomplete markets consumption model allowing for heterogeneity in discount factors, nonseparable preferences for food and other nondurables, liquidity constraints, and precautionary savings. I find statistical support for this model, especially for the non-separability of preferences for food and other nondurables. JEL D12, D91, E21
متن کاملLiquidity Constraints and Precautionary Saving
Economists working with numerical solutions to the optimal consumption/saving problem under uncertainty have long known that there are quantitatively important interactions between liquidity constraints and precautionary saving behavior. This paper provides the analytical basis for those interactions. First, we explain why the introduction of a liquidity constraint increases the precautionary s...

The permanent-income hypothesis (PIH) of Milton Friedman (1957) states that the agent saves in anticipation of possible future declines in labor income (John Y. Campbell, 1987). He also saves for precautionary reasons, and dissaves because of impatience. To justify the PIH in an intertemporal optimization framework, it has been conventional to assume both (i) quadratic utility, to turn off prec...
